Enterprising and Freedom

This post is about what I want for the future in life and business. It has been hard to formulate because I have already gained what I wanted in freedom and adventures with my family. I married the girl of my dreams. I raised my kids to be strong, smart and adventurous. I have many friends and lots of wonderful memories.

I value experiences and relationships far more than things. What I do own, I want them to be the very best and extremely useful.

When I think about this next chapter after launching the kids, I want to live into my design. I truly am a person who thinks about outcomes and enterprises that work because they are built right. It's wealth without sorrow.

I want to be around smart people and work with the best. That definitely includes all the pleasure I have enjoyed game planning, pushing and risking together as partners with my dear friend, Chad.

So, some quotes that I have thought about over the years:

“The key to eternal happiness is low overhead and no debt.”

Lynda Barry
"Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity."

Charles Mingus
"It is creativity, not hard work, that's at the heart of success in any field of endeavor. And in order for a person to have the time to engage in creative thinking, he must learn to work efficiently."

Robert Ringer
"My No. 1 rule of wealth building is to invest only in what you know. If you think you might not know enough or have the right resources, you probably don't.

Mark Ford
"When you have ready access to wealth-building opportunities, you understand that they, in and of themselves, have little value. What counts is being able to analyze them quickly and efficiently, cull out the best ones and then take advantage of them. That knowledge is what separates you from the rest of the pack. And that knowledge is scarce."

Mark Ford

I want to work creatively, rather than laboriously. I want leverage - money, time, relationships and content - to get big deals done that pay off in cash flow and exits.

I also want to live creatively by spending time enjoying the sports I have loved over the years:

  • Snowboarding - I love being free and not thinking about anything but the carves I am making and the mountains I am on
  • Walking - Daily basic movement and time to de-stress and let my mind wander on the problems I am seeking to solve
  • Tennis - I love competing and pushing myself mentally to figure out how to win against any opponent or situation
  • Mountain biking - I have not done this in years, but I want to buy a $10K mountain bike for me and Sonya and take long rides pushing myself technically and fitness-wise

I want to have a slopeside place to enjoy these sports that my kids and grandkids can simply walk out and get on the slopes to snowboard, hike or mountain bike.

I want to be able to run our businesses from anywhere and think creatively to understand what deals work and how to put them together to make money.

I want to keep meeting many people and increase opportunities by accessing the right people for the right jobs that are needed in our ventures.

I want to have the chips to execute the creative solutions we come up with leverage. We know we can hustle, but I want to skip the line and use resources, creativity and money to drive compounding effects. I want to solve our problems by dealmaking.

I also want to have a smart team that can help us evaluate deals, set up structures, drive ROI reporting and make us smarter with finances.

I also enjoy spending time with my wife and want to love her, serve her and help her get better at the things she enjoys.

Lastly, part of creativity, I want to work from anywhere and get to beaches and beautiful places to take care of my stress so I can be there for my grandchildren's high school graduations.

What I have, I want to build a way for my lineage to enjoy doing business by working with family resources to do their own compounding. I want my family to be stewards of God's love and gifts by pushing it forward into the next generations.
